This rather interesting question was sent to the Arrive Alive website:

Question:

“Please advise referring to the specific regulations regarding the licence for a driver towing a HORSE BOX (EB) opposed to a Code 10 Licence.

There is no clarity whether a Code 10 licence would cover for towing a Horse Box (articulate).

Please advise which municipality traffic office can carry out the necessary learners and licence test.”

We referred this to our Road Safety Experts and a response was promptly received:

Answer:

The former code 10 licence was converted to a code EC1.

If you are referring to the C1 or Code C licence, then no as the holder of such licence may only draw a trailer with a maximum GVM of 750kg.

If you are referring to a code EC1 licence then yes.

Remember if the gross combination mass or tare of the towing vehicle exceeds 3 500kg a code EB is not sufficient.

You can contact the provincial law administration for more information regarding an appropriate driving licence testing centre. I assume you are in the Western Cape. The number is 021 483 2080.
